Alzheimer Pilot - Bulgaria

The Context

In Bulgaria, there is a lack of adequate infrastructure and geographical inequalities between regions due to fragmentation of data sources. Especially in Alzheimer’s prevention and knowledge, there are gaps in citizen/patient engagement, a lack of established practices and data for early diagnostics of Alzheimer’s.

On top of that, there is poor quality data, lack of data structure and lack of database interoperability and connectedness.

Inconsistency in the regulatory framework for data processing, especially in its operationalization and in the case of secondary use of health data, makes things even more difficult.

Our Pilot

To address these challenges, we will create a pilot in Bulgaria dedicated to Alzheimer. We recognize the need for a unified database comprising high-quality and reliable data. Such a common database will benefit doctors, patient communities, and society at large by raising awareness and bridging regional gaps.

Technological advancements offer solutions to several of these challenges. By ensuring equal and swift access to quality information, promoting online information exchange between healthcare professionals and patients (and their families), and developing various software applications that seamlessly integrate with a shared data platform, we can overcome these hurdles.

Benefits

Through the digitization enabled by the Regional Smart Health Data Space we will create at VELES, we will achieve:

  • Enhanced data access, enabling increased access to high-quality health data, fostering FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data practices across our region.
Innovation and knowledge transfer, driving innovation adoption and facilitating knowledge transfer within the healthcare sector.
  • Empowered patients, who can use digitized data to make informed healthcare decisions.
  • Evidence-based policymaking, providing a robust foundation for informed decisions at the state level.
