Welcome to the VELES newsletter, the Smart Health Excellence Hub in South-East Europe. Find out what we have done in the last three months.

We Launched A New Report

We’re thrilled to announce that we launched a new report, 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦, where we dive deep into the Southeast European health data landscape, covering Romania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Greece!

This report reveals the unique challenges and remarkable progress each country is making toward creating a Regional Smart Health Data Space (RSHDS)—our initiative paving the way for the European Health Data Space.

Curious about what’s inside? You’ll find:

  •  Insightful country-by-country analysis of health data ecosystems
  •  Key players mapped out: healthcare providers, public authorities, research institutions, and the private sector
  •  SWOT analysis to understand strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for each region’s data integration journey

Curious about the European Health Data Space (EHDS)?

Discover its core building blocks and explore how its structure, functionality, and transformative potential could drive healthcare innovation across Europe.

Dive into the comprehensive resource prepared by the International Data Spaces Association, one of our Consortium Partners.

Our First Appearance in an Academic Journal

We unlocked another important milestone – the first academic paper that features one of our Consortium partners, 3AE Health – “Diagnostic Hysteroscopy Electronic Health Record System.”

Hysteroscopy still faces a significant documentation challenge due to the lack of standardized reporting protocols. In Cyprus and many clinics worldwide, health records are often paper-based, complicating the global sharing and standardization of health data.

This research reveals how even commonly performed medical procedures, often overlooked by tech vendors, can benefit from innovative, customizable digital solutions. The system presented enhances hysteroscopic data accessibility and supports data standardization, enabling interoperability across borders and creating robust datasets for training AI models.

HDHC Represented Us at Health IT Conference

Between October 29-30, 2024, our Consortium Partners from GreeceHDHC, participated in the Health IT Conference 2024 in Athens, Greece. Dimitrios Katehakis, the HDHC Director and Cluster Manager, and George Dimitriou joined leading impactful discussions.

Key takeaways included:

  • HDHC is actively working on a transformational framework to boost sustainable, data-driven health innovations in Southeast Europe as part of the VELES Excellence Hub. This March, VELES produced a pivotal report proposing strategic pathways for the region’s innovation ecosystem to evolve towards regional health data spaces.

  • Over the past two months, HDHC has been coordinating efforts within the European consortium IRHIS project, focused on building the first integrated EU-wide value chain for demonstrating advanced remote care services.
Dimitrios Katehakis emphasized the power of creating synergies, showcasing best practices, and fostering incentives for research and development. George also highlighted the importance of raising awareness around the secondary use of health data and the significant business opportunities it presents.

VELES Was Presented at SHIFT-Hub Demo Day

On October 15, our Consortium Partners from Romania, Imago-Mol Cluster, participated at SHIFT-HUB DemoDay in Bucharest, alongside the COPAC Association and the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Carmen Mihai, Cluster Manager, took the stage to present our visionary plans at the VELES Excellence Hub.

We Were at GATE Annual Conference

On 21st of November, the workshop “Digital Health Diagnostic and Prognostic algorithms, data, platforms and tools” was organized during the GATE Annual Conference 2024, and we were honoured that our project was presented there!

Coming Up – Data Spaces Symposium in March 2025

We’re thrilled to announce the next Data Spaces Symposium will take place at the Hilton Hotel in Warsaw on March 11-12, 2025, during Polish ICT Week.
