From March 12–14, 2024, VELES was prominently featured at the International Data Spaces Association (IDSA) booth during the Data Spaces Symposium in Darmstadt, Germany. Alongside this presentation, our four pilot studies were also highlighted, demonstrating cutting-edge advancements in data-driven innovation.
Insights into Collaboration and Innovation in Health Data
Maro Bader, Excellence Lead for Digital Transformation at Roche, addressed critical challenges in the healthcare sector. Bader emphasized the importance of trust as the cornerstone for fostering collaboration and overcoming pain points in healthcare.
Patricia Serrano Candelas, representing La Fe Health Research Institute, presented the groundbreaking EU-funded project, EUCAIM: European Federation for Cancer Images. This initiative unites 76 partners across Europe to establish a federated, pan-European digital infrastructure. The project focuses on FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) cancer-related de-identified images sourced from real-world data. EUCAIM exemplifies the collaborative spirit driving the realization of the European Health Data Space (EHDS) vision.
Policy Frameworks Shaping the Future of Health Data
The journey toward implementing the European Health Data Space has sparked critical legislative updates across EU Member States. In Germany, the Federal Ministry of Health is spearheading efforts with two transformative policies: the Digital Supply Act (Digitale-Versorgung-Gesetz, DVG) and the Health Data Use Act (Gesundheitsdatennutzungsgesetz, GDNG).
The DVG introduces reforms to regulate Disease Management Programmes (DMPs)—comprehensive treatment plans tailored for individuals with chronic diseases. These programs, operational in Germany since 2002 through statutory health insurance partnerships with healthcare providers, are designed to offer long-term, adaptive care aligned with patients’ unique life circumstances.
By fostering digitalization, these legislative frameworks aim to enhance data accessibility and usability, unlocking the potential for innovative healthcare solutions across Europe.
